Could Be Worse

Boy, this makes me want to complain less about the "Use this list or else" diocesan approach to homeschoolers. That these people are still in the Church, despite all, when others have left for far lesser reasons, strikes me as a heroic demonstration of forgiveness.

Sharon-

I have two sisters who live in Belleville and I think it speaks to the notion of a very bad, overarching, 'good-ol'-boy-network' community spirit very much alive and pervasive in that area of southern Illinois. My older sister ran a Christian-themed (but not Catholic) youth outreach coffee house there, that served as a gathering point for the area's disaffected youth, as well as a place for regional Christian-themed music acts to ply their wares. When more kids into the goth/punk scene started to frequent the coffee house in full regalia, the local community leaders began to look for an excuse to 'excise the undesirables' and close her down. They settled on declaring her building out-of-code, putting the cost of compliance beyond her ability to operate any longer. So the mention of authoritative oppression occurring in Belleville, IL is of little surprise.

On a separate note, check this out if you haven't already-

Re: the Chron article: Ouch. The Proust comment, especially. Have I blogged lately on the taste of a madeleine, and the memories it brings back?

Hi there, I am a homeschooling mom in Texas and I had some questions for you- concerning the real world implemantation of the FlyLady's strategies. I didn't see any links to email you directly. What is the best way to send you some questions? Thanks!

Hi--At some point I'm going to figure out how to set up an "e-mail me" link in the sidebar. For the moment, feel free to use the comments boxes. Actually I'd been thinking of blogging briefly on Flylady; maybe tonight? Sometimes I think Flylady is recreating St. Therese's "Little way," what with sweeping the floor for God, or as Flylady puts it, blessing your family through housework.

Okay, here goes...
I looked at her website a few years ago when her ways were being praised by many in our group. I really liked what she had to say, but I felt like her suggestions were only going to work for women who sent their kids off to school and probably only had one or two at best. Others in the neighborhood agreed. Do you think that her methods are actually practical for those of us who have three in homeschool and a toddler on the side? Do you make any alterations? I will take another look at her website while waiting for your response. Thanks for your help! I am always looking for better ways to organize our life and routine.

I've heard several friends talk about Flylady, but I can't bring myself to check it out since someone who particularly annoys me raves about it. Such is the power of prejudice.

And, since you say to leave a note for you in lieu of sending email (since I don't know if I still have your address): referring back to several posts ago, I'd love to be put on your curriculum show and tell mailing list! Sorry for such a delayed response -- lots going on here...
